450L Heli with Pixhawk

Pixhawk is an open source flight controller for not only multicopter, but also fixed-wing and helicopter. Here I tried to use Pixhawk in a 450L helicopter as this is a real challenge.

My 450L is a mixed one with parts from GARTT, ALZRC, and Tarot. The main frame is from GARTT while the rest parts are mostly from Tarot. I chose the Platinum 50A ESC from HOBBYWING and the H2221/1880KV brushless motor from FlowerPower for my heli. The servos I used are KST DS315MG. The servo speed is not good enough for 3D. However, it is still fine for working with Pixhawk. I use two 11.2V 2200mAh LiPo packs in series connection. The flying time is more than 10 minutes. My Pixhawk is the cheap community edition with M8N GPS for less than two thousand Chinese Yuan.

I won't post how I set/tune it up here as this was a tedious process (get rid of interference, tune up the parameters). Lucky I have some experience with heli tuning and didn't crash during the setup procedure. Go ahead to see the video below for the outcome of my efforts. Due to the bad weather recently, I filmed the video by myself (held the remote control in one hand while the camera in the other) for only one and a half minutes. But it includes the most exciting moment - auto landing.

Following with some pictures as usual. The most tough job to install pixhawk is wiring especially trying to put the controller with irrational connecting port layout into a small heli which does not have much room left.

It is really fun to make the heli flying automatically and also to prove its performance.
